Apple Posts Rails Tutorial
Well, I wasn’t expecting Apple Computer, Inc., to get in on the act, but I suppose it’s unsurprising that they have. Ruby on Rails and OS X are, after all, two great tastes that taste great together. It appears that that the Rails community drives enough folks towards Macs that it’s on their radar. (Demo videos, anyone?)
And so Apple’s posted a lengthy, readable, well-illustrated tutorial introducing folks to Ruby on Rails, starting from the install on an OS X Mac. It’s surprisingly deep for an intro tutorial; I haven’t seen one online yet that has gone quite this far. It’s not as funny as I’d like, but you can’t have everything.
If you’re flopping around in the kiddie end of the pool trying to work up the nerve to go to that 4 ft marker… strap on your swimmies and take a peek.
"funny" really isn’t something I generally look for in a tutorial. I mean, I’m down with some informality, but often times humor (usually too much of it) can get in the way of the actual goal of a tutorial: pedagogy.

The thing that I enjoyed about Why’s poignant guide and some of Amy’s articles is that the humor adds a little "right brained" timeout that I think keeps the mind in balance. I can see how, for some, this could be distracting. I liken it to looking away from the monitor every few minutes to briefly stare at something else. It is like a breather than allows me to extend my reading session and delve deeper into the material. It’s the reason why I’m looking forward to Amy’s "Right Brained" rails book.
On the subject of the OS X tutorial, I’m glad that someone at Apple is putting effort into the Rails community. That increased my enthusiasm to learn Rails. It’s safe to say that Apple and the Ruby on Rails team share similar beliefs in design, such as elegance and simplicity. It seems like a perfect fit.

I very much agree with Brian here. And I long for Amy’s book too… I feel as though the rightbrainyness goes through all of the community, I recognize it in Ruby even, in Rails of course, the fact that it’s so terse and english-like, but in some places it’s missing. The Agile book is great… but I think yours will mix in well with the dominating taste of leftybrain in the giant stew of writings available on Ruby/Rails.
